DCYF Student Laptops

The DCYF Student Laptop program is managed in partnership with World Possible

Student Laptops

Students are granted 1 of 3 laptop hardware types:

  • HP Elitebooks running Chrome OS - some CFs

  • HP Probooks running Chrome OS - remaining CFs and college students inside Green Hill or Echo Glen

  • Justice Tech Solutions Securebook 5.0 running Endless OS - All non-college students

note: any HP devices currently running Endless OS should be transitioned to Chrome OS which either World Possible or DCYF IT can help process

WiFi Access Levels

PROPOSED 9/8/22 - WiFi Access Level 4 "DCYF_Edu_4" - CFs only - special laptops at each CFs.

  • Even fewer restrictions than Edu_3; this would allow social media, gaming, and streaming.

WiFi Access Level 3 "DCYF_Edu_3" - CFs and some College Students

  • All students at the CFs and some college students, particularly at Echo Glen, are given HP Elitebooks or Probooks running Chrome OS. These students log in to their HP Chrome devices with user names and passwords set up by World Possible or select DCYF IT staff with proper permissions.

  • These students connect to CF of Edu_3 WiFi signals, which gives them fairly broad access to the internet with some basic provisions to attempt to block pornography or social media. These students must be monitored while using devices.

  • It is possible that some students are taking their laptops away from the CF and to a college site. Contact IT help desk to enable other WiFi signals on these devices.

WiFi Access Level 2 "DCYF_Edu_2" - Green Hill Students in College - Local Area Network

  • Students at Green Hill in College currently have Justice Tech Solutions Securebook 5.0 devices running Endless OS connecting to a WiFi Signal. This WiFi signal provides access to an "offline" or Intranet version of Canvas. This WiFi signal also provides some limited internet connectivity to very specific whitelisted websites such as EBSCO. By early 2023, we hope to have transitioned this group of students to HP devices running Chrome OS

WiFi Access Level "DCYF_Edu_1" - 1 / 0 - Green Hill or Echo Glen Residents not in college

  • These students are exclusively using Securebook devices running Endless OS offline. This provides the student standalone resources for learning and entertainment without going online.

To create Chrome OS devices:

  • A number of DCYF IT staff are capable of transitioning an HP device from Endless OS to Chrome OS. This process includes logging into BIOS, unlocking WiFi, booting to a USB stick, installing Chrome OS, and enterprise registering the device with World Possible. Tutorials are here:

    1. create Chrome OS Flex USB (guide below)

    2. install Chrome OS Flex on the device (guide below)

    3. enroll Chrome OS Flex device in World Possible enterprise (guide below)

  • If you cannot find a DCYF IT staff to do this for you, you can ship the HP laptops back to World Possible. Please request a shipping label from jeremy@worldpossible.org

To create Chrome OS user accounts:

  • Select DCYF staff have been granted permission to create Chrome OS user accounts within the domain dcyfedu.org. The user accounts they create are currently all assigned WiFi Access Level 3 permissions. Program staff should be made aware of any requests to create these loosely controlled accounts (Gerdon Jones or Lisa McAllister)

    • IT Staff: using your dcyfedu.org account, log in to https://admin.google.com

    • Create a user account using the student's first name and last initial lisam@dcyfedu.org for example

    • Ensure the student is being joined to the correct domain name and organizational unit

    • Copy the password that Google automatically creates and send it manually to the correct staff member who will be assisting the student

  • If you cannot find an\ DCYF IT staff to do this for you, you can ask jeremy@worldpossible.org to create the user accounts for you
